Watchmen: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

Bold and bristling, Watchmen isn't always easy viewing, but by adding new layers of cultural context and a host of complex characters it expertly builds on its source material to create an impressive identity of its own.

Critic Reviews for Watchmen Season 1

All Critics (103) | Top Critics (30)

Lindelof has turned it into a stunningly cinematic look at white supremacy, policing and race in the US. Watchmen is mystifying but hugely entertaining, if deeply troubling.

Dec 17, 2019 | Full Review…

Based on the episodes I've seen, it's too early to tell whether Lindelof can make the show's enigmas pay off in a satisfying way, but so far, I'm ready to give him the chance.

Lindelof's work will either add up to the coolest, most intricate dramatic series this side of Westworld or the biggest swing-and-a-miss in recent television history.

An energetic, unruly show with a very concise and ambitious objective.

Watchmen is a thrilling and scintillating series that is sure to find armies of fans, old and new, who will undoubtedly be besotted.

Sunday night on HBO, I saw something I thought I'd never see on television: the depiction of a dark day in American history that not many know about-the Tulsa massacre.

I can't begin to go into the smart, mind-bending complications the show, created by Damon Lindelof, detonates. But it's an example of our current golden age of television.

Dec 23, 2019 | Full Review…

This show transcends more than time, it transcends boundaries, it breaks the nerd ceiling and transports people into the narrative just beyond Jupiter - and people are not scared whatsoever of the climate and new world.

Dec 19, 2019 | Full Review…

By honoring the past, but moving the property forward, the new Watchmen, created by Damon Lindelof, became one of the year's best television series.

Dec 18, 2019 | Rating: 4/4 | Full Review…

It works perfectly, and presents a linear continuation of the world created by Moore and Gibbons.

HBO's Watchmen embraces Alan Moore's original vision while forging its own path.

Dec 29, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Watchmen encapsulates the weariness of Black America, our wounds healing just enough for the scabs to be torn off again.

Started off promising and had a good cast and soundtrack, but halfway through the season it got too weird, graphic, overly complex and seemingly trying to hard and falling short.

It was a bit slow to start but an amazing mini series.

Really loved this show it was a great sequel to The Graphic novel. Really wish they would do a second season but I think it's done.

One of the most amazing shows I've ever seen. If you haven't read the book, it's still very enjoyable, but fans of the book will have a great time watching this. It feels like a natural progression of the novel, rather than a cash grab sequel. It has great characters, both old and new, and there are some great parallels and references to find. Each episode feels like you're reading an issue of the book. The last episode falls flat a bit, but overall, it is a beautifully crafted, amazing series. The Hooded Justice episode may be the greatest television episode I've ever seen.

One of the best show's on HBO or TV for that matter. The writing, dialogue, story are all amazing. There are a lot of different plot lines that eventually converge which could get a little confusing for some but if you follow along you will be rewarded. There are also a lot of racial elements to the plot. A lot of main themes are about white supremacy. It his however very well done. It makes me wonder if a lot of the negative user reviews are because of the racial elements in the series.

This show had some incredibly creative moments but I'm surprised there hasn't been a critical backlash for all the things that didn't make sense or didn't move the story forward. It had a lot of problems. And it shouldn't be at 96% because that would indicate it was almost perfect and it was far from perfect. Here's a list of some problems with the show. 1. Seeing how Doctor Manhattan is a God, there's no real way he could have been captured and destroyed. Manhattan could have easily transported Angela and himself (like he did his children) to a safe location, or even better, another planet. It simply didn't make sense. Manhatten was supposed to be a nuclear physics and quantum physics scientist and yet he's so profoundly incompetent that he manages to fuck, nearly everything he tries, up. 2. The watchmen comic is about moral ambiguity. It points out that even superheroes have demons. While the characters in this show have their skeletons. Their complexity ranged from racist, to not racist. It wasn't hard to tell who the writers wanted you to route for and I see that as lazy. 3. Hooded Justice having sex with captain metropolis did nothing to bring the story forward and was completely unnecessary. Maybe June Reeves should have discovered the affair. At least that would have given her a reason to leave Will because it was confusing she left him for being a superhero when it was her idea in the first place. 4. Everyone in this show is supposedly a genius about but nothing they do is efficient or effective. The only character that appears to have any common sense or a consistent goal is Angela King.

Worth a rewatch as soon as it's over. Probably my favorite show of 2019. This show should win all the awards.

What a great show to watch! It's creative, intriguing and surprising. Never knew what was going to happen next. The only thing i didn't liked was that political agenda that we are seeing more often every time in this streaming platforms. You're only going to like if you are not a fan of the comics or feel susceptible by history.
