Critic Reviews for The Unicorn Season 1

All Critics (26) | Top Critics (12)

I'm happy to say that [Walter] Goggins makes the shift into conventionality and rectitude effortlessly.

Dec 4, 2019 | Full Review…

The cast all do lovely work - [Walter] Goggins is entirely at ease playing a person not entirely at ease with the new rules of romance, and his castmates are reliably funny as they push him along and offer secondhand advice.

Just the type of series that'll make parents happy they don't have to drive to the theater for their dinner-and-a-show date night.

Of course, we shouldn't be surprised that Walton Goggins can anchor a family sitcom. He's a great actor, that's what great actors do.

Sep 26, 2019 | Full Review…

Goggins is good in this sitcom, surrounded by a solid cast that works hard to sand the edges. He does too. When he pulls out a frozen parm, the last of the dinners he got after the death of his spouse, he starts to tear up.

[Walton] Goggins fares fairly well in this very tamped-down mode, even if a number of his previous characters clearly would want to choke Wade Felton to death.

What really makes The Unicorn special is its ability to successfully navigate the cliche-laden landscape of domestic dramas and family comedies - and occasionally, transcend them in subtle, exciting ways.

Jan 9, 2020 | Full Review…

"The Unicorn" is funny, smart, sweet and engaging.

Dec 4, 2019 | Full Review…

[Walter] Goggins underplays his role, going for a meek and sweet approach - and it works, at least enough to have you watching, and rooting for him.

Dec 4, 2019 | Full Review…

The show is pleasant, if unexceptional, though it's nice to see Goggins playing an average nice guy - instead of a silver-tongued crook, as in "Justified." He's so average, though, that the show threatens to become a sleep aid.

Nov 7, 2019 | Full Review…

Star Walton Goggins fits well and is surrounded by talented actors loaded with potential. The premise is nice and easy to sell. Yet, it hasn't found its X-factor.

Oct 1, 2019 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

On paper, this show sounds dreadful, but it rises above its premise largely thanks to [Walter] Goggins.

Seems forced, awkward and rather sad and boring...

Had higher expectation for this show but it turns out to be kind of boring. Really disappointed at this point.

Fun and unique show, family, kids, love, discovery.
  • Jan 17, 2020
This is a must watch for me. It's a fresh look at family comedy taking on a very real situation - showing a newly widowed Dad navigating parenting solo as well as trying to move on with his life (I.E. dating, friendships etc.) Our house gives it a 5 star!

The lead is a strong actor and portrays real humanity along with his humor. The stories are quite believable and rarely does the dialog get silly or "sit-commy". Its fun to watch but also sticks with me for hours after its over. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Really cute and funny. Love seeing Walton in this kind of role.
  • Jan 10, 2020
Just a genuinely wholesome good time

Really enjoyed it, thought all the characters were genuine, funny and worked well together. Watched all 10 episodes over 2 evenings. Fingers crossed there will be more episodes.

    ???? ? ?????? ?? ?????

One of the worst sitcoms I have ever seen. Unsure why others find the writing witty and or clever. I found it juvenile and formulaic.
