Critic Reviews for The New Pope Season 1

All Critics (42) | Top Critics (18)

"The New Pope" has a lot to say about the church's role in the modern world, its significance to socio-political events, and what's expected of its leaders - and it says it with a sharpened edge.

Camp extravagance is the keynote of The New Pope, another season of visually sumptuous, rhetorically grandiose and thematically provocative Vatican capers.

Unlike season one, whose story seemed to lurch along as if truggling to find its way, season two's narrative unspools steadily - if slowly, at times - and arrives upon a conclusion that feels resolute and satisfying. And -- happily, crucially -- weird.

For the most part the series is as delicious as it was before... The true anchor of the series, it's now clear, is not any particular pope-star but rather Sorrentino's strange artistic vision.

This is a luscious and ambitious show that I'm surprised has made it to a second series.

It can also veer into indulgence, sometimes seeming to shock for shock's sake. Prepare yourself for those moments... but do not let them stop you from gobbling up every strange, sad, sexy, unsettling second of this series.

If it's a sense of artfully framed and beautifully shot mischief you want, The New Pope is your only man.

Without Lenny at its center, The New Pope can dig deeper into the workplace politics of the Church, and mine the conundrums not of the boss but of the entire organization.

Slow-moving drama has nudity, language, religious hypocrisy.

The power of The New Pope isn't in its shock moments as much as its in its self-awareness.

John Paul III is played by John Malkovich, and it is an example of perfect casting.

The New Pope, despite the more somber and mournful tone, is still exhilarating.

Audience Reviews for The New Pope: Season 1

Not a patch on the original and appears to have lost its way, going for obvious gimmick and salacious content over serious intent. I am devastated as I loved season one, and thought it challenged the viewer at every step. This season seems to have gone for the lowest common denominator and although I'm only 2.5 episodes in, has already ticked off on about 15 cliches (a possibly murdered pope, sexualised nuns, nuttty aristocrats who would be better placed in a Doctor Who episode etc). Weep.

Absolute trash dressed in pretty clothes. The visual design and cinematography of this show is beyond amazing. But that is all it has. There is nothing of intelligence in the plotting, the characterisation, or the laughable attempts at social commentary. This is the worst kind of faux intellectualism: it isn't even fun to watch for more than an episode or two. Also, pretty terribly misogynist.

Same great production as previous series.

The most fabulous quirky poke at the clergy loving all the writhing half naked nuns dancing before flashing disco crosses! Scheming cardinals and eyeliner wearing pope. Weird wonderful and compelling

Incredible show, as good as the first season. Sir John Brannox is an excellent character!

    Charming, surreal, unique and hilarious.

Wow, really wow! Amazing and brilliant...Can't wait for the rest of it..Was afraid that without Jude Law it would be as compelling as the first one but the second one is even more extraordinary, extravagant and beautiful until now. Sorrentino is a genius..

Loved young pope but this new version is not quirky at all, not subtly sexy but almost plain raunchy, not nearly as visually stunning, not ironic and takes unnecessarily repeatedly cheap shots at Meghan. Loving the director, the first version, Malkovich, it is a very disappointing experience.

Was not sure I would like the second season, but yea, I was pulled in.
