The Mandalorian: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
The Mandalorian

Critics Consensus

Action-packed and expertly-crafted -- if at times a bit too withholding -- The Mandalorian is a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe that benefits greatly from the cuteness of its cargo.

Critic Reviews for The Mandalorian Season 1

All Critics (15) | Top Critics (5)

[The Mandalorian] has an empire of sentiment serving as the wind at its back, and as long as it keeps up its momentum, even those of us programmed to dissect and critique programs may be content to simply sail along with it.

This is a polished production that shows off every cent of its feature film budget on every frame of its run time. This isn't a "made-for-TV Star Wars, " it's a Star Wars that happens to be on TV, or streaming, as it were.

This is a visually stunning, consistently entertaining space-spaghetti-Western serial.

Favreau is as brilliant a fanboy writer as he is a fanboy director, and in Filoni, a true padawan to Star Wars creator George Lucas, he has found a great collaborator. Between them they might have simply made a great TV show.

Dec 2, 2019 | Full Review…

The Mandalorian is easily the best Disney+ Original Show -- and quite possibly the best television show of 2019. The prefect mix between a western, samurai, and Star Wars.

Dec 27, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

It seems Lucas' family-friendly combination of high stakes in deep space with a strong sense of spiritual mystery is still a winning formula.

Dec 13, 2019 | Full Review…

It is a relief and a joy to see that The Mandalorian knows what it is here to do; it knows who it is fighting for.

Jan 6, 2020 | Full Review…

I am loving The Mandalorian, you know, the character that has seriously fallen by the wayside to the world's uproarious support of the new Baby Yoda? Yeah, that one. Good job Disney+ on this early Grand Slam.

Interestingly, the character has his own personality and is -- perhaps ironically -- more than a clone of Boba Fett.

This show is the best way to expand on the 'Star Wars' universe. [Full Review in Spanish]

Wow... that's what i feel while watching this series!(curently at S01EP7) best star-wars related content yet! Characters are really good, with the addition of many well known people like Gina, Bill, karl etc. I think keeping Mandos face hidden is good (makes him cool like a biker before he removes his helmet...) And finally (Gina) a woman thats cool, tough and buff not SASSY and weak beating everyone without a scratch while everyone else is looking surprised...She has military background gets punched and punches others and doesnt fight dirty! i like her as much as Mando to be honest! I would like it if she stayed as one of the main characters as well! Good job.

Nicely done with a bit of the original spirit, but with a few "useless" episodes and a bit naive way to resolve plot/challenges at times.

By far the best Star Wars content of late. Rivals Empire and Rogue one. Favreau as director scared me but this story is compelling and I'm so elated to simply say I was wrong.

I can't say anything but "wow"...

Definitely one of the best things to come out of disney star wars alongside say rogue one. It brings a gritty but adventurous experience that feels like star wars.

great action! so polished it feels you're watching a movie! and, of course, baby yoda!!

So it turns out Disney CAN make a decent Star Wars story The show had it's ups and downs, some episodes were stronger than others but as a whole the series was broken up into individual mini stories this format worked incredibly well my only criticism is the length of the episodes at 30 minutes.

Only watched the first 2 episodes so far, and I'm trying to figure out how this got 95% on RT. Almost no dialogue, some OK actions scenes, but nothing to write home about, and I'm waiting for something to start happening. I'll give a few more episodes, but so far I'm definitely disappointed in this series. I really like most of the Star Wars movies, but this is not living up to the brand.

Terrible. Inconsistent. Shit. The story is useless, don't give a shit about anything other than that Gina Carano is hot and I wouldn't mind knowing what is up with baby yoda. Other than that, no interest. Ridiculous combat and time frame fallacies too. On the plus side, armour looks cool. But cool armour not make good show I say.

For the first ever Star Wars live action show, well done! The Mandalorian clearly takes inspiration from the original trilogy as well as Clint Eastwood-esque westerns. The show is great because it presents a semi-mysterious lead who never reveals his face, yet you can tell what he is thinking by just looking at his helmet. The show tends to be more episodic rather than having an overlining plot to connect each episode. I think it works in the shows favor. This show is great for Star Wars fans (of course), but also anybody who likes a mysterious lead, who is a badass, and pays homage to old school westerns. 4/5!
